Reform UK has named Matt Goodwin as its candidate for the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election. Goodwin, known for his right-wing activism and role as a commentator on GB News, has faced controversy in the past over comments that sparked a racism debate within Reform.
In a recent report by Hope Not Hate, it was highlighted that Goodwin, a former academic turned activist, has been increasingly involved in supporting Reform. With a substantial following on Substack, he has been recognized for his understanding of far-right party strategies and effective communication with their supporters.
Responding to questions, Goodwin expressed his views on the current political landscape, criticizing Labour for internal conflicts and emphasizing the importance of government representation for all hardworking individuals regardless of their background. Notably, he had previously made remarks regarding Islamophobia that were flagged by Hope Not Hate.
As Reform’s candidate for the by-election, Goodwin distanced himself from traditional politics, stating that he is not aligned with the Tory party or the establishment, highlighting his outsider perspective. The event also saw Lee Anderson, an ex-Tory MP, launching attacks on Keir Starmer, accusing him of evading scrutiny by traveling to China, and asserting Reform’s determination to increase its presence in Parliament.
The Gorton by-election was triggered by the resignation of independent MP Andrew Gwynne due to health reasons.
