Renowned comedian Ricky Gervais has urged government officials to put an end to harsh policies that force homeless individuals to give up their pets in order to access support services. Gervais emphasized that vulnerable people are frequently denied assistance and accommodation because they refuse to part with their animal companions, which are essential for emotional well-being and companionship.
In collaboration with fellow actor Peter Egan from the TV series “After Life,” Gervais called on Members of Parliament to enact regulations ensuring that social housing providers cannot unreasonably reject pets if a safety assessment deems it appropriate. Gervais expressed his full support for Street Paws and their “No One Left Outside” campaign, emphasizing that no one should have to make the heart-wrenching choice between a home and their beloved pet.
The campaign, presented to the All-Party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare Group (APDAWG), aims to address the plight of homeless individuals and their pets. Egan highlighted the significance of animals as companions and sources of hope, citing the emotional bond depicted in the TV show “After Life” between the protagonist and his German shepherd.
Street Paws, a charity organization supporting homeless individuals and their pets in northern England, advocates for a change in regulations to provide compassion and clarity in such situations. Founder Michelle Southern OBE stressed that for many marginalized individuals, their pet represents a constant in a life marked by trauma and instability. Dr. Marc Abraham OBE, a veterinarian and animal welfare advocate, emphasized the crucial role pets play in offering comfort and support, especially in times of crisis.
