An 18-year-old named Keith Lee from Park View Drive, Poppintree Park in Dublin, Ireland, stood before Blanchardstown District Court facing charges of dangerous driving causing the death of 16-year-old Grace Lynch on Ratoath Road in Finglas. The prosecution alleges that Lee’s driving, which included excessive speed, resulted in the fatal accident. The charges under the Road Traffic Act carry a maximum penalty of 10 years.
During a bail hearing, Lee acknowledged that he was “caught red-handed” and made complete admissions regarding his role in the crash. Garda Thomas McDaniel testified that Lee did not contest the evidence presented in court and expressed his desire not to cause further distress to Grace’s family. The Garda highlighted the severity of the charge and the potential sentence, emphasizing the gravity of the incident that led to Grace’s tragic death.
According to reports, Lee was cautioned at the scene and admitted to being the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision with Grace, who was crossing the road when the traffic lights were red. CCTV footage obtained by the police captured the entire sequence of events, showing Grace attempting to cross at the pedestrian lights when a motorcycle, allegedly traveling at a speed of at least 85km/h, struck her.
Lee’s solicitor, Wayne Kenny, acknowledged his client’s full cooperation with the investigation and emphasized Lee’s remorse for the accident. Kenny mentioned that Lee, who has no prior criminal record, suffers from ADHD and was under medication during his detention. Despite the overwhelming evidence against Lee, his legal team requested bail, emphasizing his willingness to take responsibility and prevent further anguish for Grace’s family.
After considering the circumstances, Judge Aine Clancy granted bail on the condition that Lee provide a bond of €2,500 and a €1,000 independent surety. Lee was prohibited from operating any motor vehicle, surrendering his passport, providing contact details to the police, and reporting to Ballymun Garda Station regularly. The judge noted Lee’s clean record and admissions while stressing the seriousness of the case and the presumption of innocence.
