Trump Threatens 200% Tariff on French Wine amid Diplomatic Spat

Donald Trump may have disclosed a private message from French President Emmanuel Macron before threatening significant tariffs on French wine and Champagne. Trump suggested that the tariffs could persuade Macron to join his “Board of Peace.” When questioned about Macron’s refusal to join, Trump insinuated that Macron would soon be out of office and indicated imposing a 200% tariff on French wines. France has reportedly declined the invitation to join the US-proposed initiative, as per a source close to Macron. Trump later claimed in a Truth Social post that Macron had messaged him about Greenland before the tariff threats.

A screenshot revealed Macron agreeing with Trump on issues concerning Iran and Syria but questioning Trump’s actions regarding Greenland in the alleged texts. Macron also proposed a meeting with Trump and other G7 leaders post-World Economic Forum in Davos and invited Trump for dinner in Paris.

The concept of the ‘Board of Peace’ was initially introduced to oversee Gaza’s rebuilding but has now evolved to address global conflict resolution, as outlined in Trump’s recent invitations to world leaders. The draft, sent to approximately 60 countries, calls for a $1 billion contribution for membership lasting more than three years.

Countries like Australia, Brazil, Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Jordan, New Zealand, Pakistan, Turkey, and Vietnam have been invited to join the board. Additionally, Putin has been extended an invitation and is reportedly contemplating acceptance.
