A bomb squad swiftly responded to a retail park in Swindon after what appeared to be military ammunition was handed in at one of the stores. The Greenbridge Retail Park was sealed off on Tuesday morning following the discovery. Trained officers arrived at the scene to safely dispose of the items, according to the police.
Wiltshire Police confirmed the incident and cordoned off a store at Greenbridge Retail Park where the suspected military ammunition was surrendered. The rest of the retail park remained operational, and updates were promised as the situation progressed.
Following the incident, police vehicles were visible in the park’s car park. The discovery was reported to have been made at the Cancer Research UK store, adjacent to Boots, with other stores like Tapi Carpets & Floors, Currys, Next, and Smyths Toys also situated in the retail park.
The military items were reportedly handed in as part of a donation to the Cancer Research UK store by a member of the public. The store contacted the police for safety reasons, leading to a temporary evacuation until the items were safely removed, allowing the store to reopen.
This event occurred shortly after a significant fire erupted at the nearby Groundwell Trading Estate, causing a loud explosion that shook nearby homes. The fire was contained by the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue team, attributing the incident to an accidental printing machine failure.
