Labour Minister Rejects Mandatory BAME Candidate List

Cabinet Minister Shabana Mahmood has rejected the idea of implementing an exclusively ethnic minority candidate list to prevent Andy Burnham from running for a parliamentary seat.

As the head of Labour’s governing body, the Home Secretary confirmed that senior officials would convene to review Burnham’s application to contest the Gorton & Denton by-election. Burnham, currently serving as the Mayor of Greater Manchester, requires approval from the Labour National Executive Committee (NEC) to proceed.

Burnham’s intentions have stirred internal strife within the Labour Party, with concerns that his candidacy could challenge Keir Starmer’s leadership. The Mayor of Greater Manchester has openly expressed his aspirations for higher political roles, causing discontent among Starmer’s supporters after his actions at a previous Labour conference.

Rumors circulating in Westminster suggest Burnham might face obstacles to his candidacy. Mahmood dismissed the notion of a mandatory all-BAME candidate shortlist, citing legal constraints. However, she acknowledged the party’s past use of all-female candidate lists.

In a call for unity among Labour MPs, Mahmood urged colleagues to prioritize party cohesion over engaging in divisive political theatrics resembling those of the Conservative Party.

Expressing admiration for Burnham’s leadership in Greater Manchester, Mahmood emphasized the need for top political talent like Burnham to contribute to the Labour Government. She highlighted Burnham’s commitment to leveraging his experience in Manchester for broader national impact within the Labour Party.

Emphasizing the importance of avoiding internal conflicts, Mahmood cautioned against replicating the Conservative Party’s approach, urging Labour members to maintain a calm and collected demeanor to earn public trust.
