The father of a young soccer coach who tragically passed away after consuming MDMA due to its cost-effectiveness compared to alcohol has issued a heartfelt cautionary message to other parents.
On New Year’s Eve, Kieran Bassett, a resident of Hastings, was socializing at a friend’s residence, indulging in pre-drinking activities when he reportedly ingested an ecstasy pill. Shortly thereafter, his health rapidly deteriorated, leading to his emergency transfer to Conquest Hospital, where he was placed on life support.
Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, Kieran succumbed to the effects of the substance and was declared deceased shortly thereafter. Mark Bassett, his grieving father, has candidly shared the painful experience of losing his son and his determination to dissuade young individuals from experimenting with drugs.
Mark Bassett conveyed to MailOnline, “The affordability of a pill in contrast to alcohol is the only rationale I can fathom for his decision to try the drug, given his promising future.” He further disclosed, “Law enforcement has indicated a high probability of contamination or adulteration of the pill with other substances.”
Reflecting on the harrowing sight of his son’s final moments, Mr. Bassett described the distressing scene of watching Kieran’s life slip away, emphasizing the urgency for youngsters to safeguard their friends against drug use. He emphasized the unpredictability of substance composition and urged peers to intervene and notify parents if they suspect drug consumption to prevent potential tragedies.
The family’s aspiration now is to establish a lasting legacy for Kieran, leveraging his story to discourage youngsters from drug experimentation. Kieran, a 20-year-old working as a car insurance renewals advisor, dedicated his time to coaching the under-11 team at Hollington Hawks Youth Football Club and aspired to attain coaching certifications.
The football club expressed, “Kieran’s impact as a coach transcended mere mentorship, serving as a beacon of inspiration and encouragement for our young players.” They vowed to cherish his contributions and uphold his influence within the team.
In commemoration of Kieran, a GoFundMe initiative has been initiated, with all proceeds slated to support grassroots youth football initiatives at the club, as confirmed by his family.
