Mini Eggs are a personal favorite of mine, and I’m always on the lookout for them, especially during Easter season. The delightful aroma, satisfying crunch, and attractive pastel colors make them one of the top Easter treats available. However, due to their brand name, they can be a bit pricey and sometimes challenging to find. Curious to see if any supermarket own-brand alternatives could measure up to the original, I decided to try out various options from leading supermarkets like Aldi, Lidl, M&S, and Asda.
Each major supermarket offers its budget-friendly version of the beloved Mini Eggs, all more cost-effective than the original. After purchasing packs from different stores, I was eager to taste them, having never tried any of these alternatives before.
Comparing them side by side with a pack of Cadbury’s Mini Eggs for reference, I found one standout winner that even surpassed the original. I was so impressed that I plan to stock up on as many packets as possible before Easter arrives.
Starting with the Cadbury Mini Eggs, the familiar taste and texture were delightful. The crispy shell and smooth chocolate center never disappoint. However, as Easter approaches, finding these treats can become challenging, with some supermarkets temporarily out of stock. Typically priced around £2 for an 80g pack, they equate to approximately £2.50 per 100g.
Moving on to the alternatives, Asda’s milk chocolate mini eggs were a bargain at just £1.12 for an 80g pack, making them more affordable than Cadbury. Despite the lower price, the taste didn’t match up to the premium quality of the original. While the chocolate was somewhat smooth, it lacked the same sweet aroma. Overall, they landed in the middle of the ranking with a score of 2.5/5.
The Mister Choc eggs, priced at £1.15 for 80g, came in as the second cheapest option. Although the texture was initially surprising, the taste was decent but fell short of the Cadbury Mini Eggs. I rated them one out of five.
Aldi and Lidl offered similar products, with their Choceur Mini Eggs priced at £3.39 for 256g. While they were not as hard as expected, the taste didn’t stand out either. The chocolate was on the bland side, earning them a mid-tier rating of two out of five.
M&S’s speckled egg biscuits and chocolate bars have been trending on social media, sparking my curiosity to try them. Their Mini Eggs impressed me with their size, glossy appearance, perfect chocolate-to-shell ratio, and delicious filling. Priced at £1.79 for a 90g bag, they offer a more affordable yet satisfying alternative to Cadbury’s. I highly recommend them as a solid substitute, earning a perfect five-star rating from me.
Overall, exploring these supermarket own-brand Mini Eggs was a fun and tasty experience, revealing some surprising contenders that could rival the original Cadbury’s version.
