Kindle Users Brace for Bookstore Lockout

Kindle users were previously alerted to the possibility that their e-readers might soon lose the ability to access new books. This change is set to take effect in just 24 hours, starting on May 20, 2026, impacting older models like the Kindle 5 and the first-generation Kindle Paperwhite, preventing users from adding or reading new content.

For those concerned about the Amazon update affecting their devices, a list of the models that will be blocked from the book store this week is available below:

– Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
– Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
– Kindle Keyboard (2010)
– Kindle 4 (2011)
– Kindle Touch (2011)
– Kindle 5 (2012)
– Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)

Existing owners of these devices will not lose access to their current libraries, as previously purchased books will remain accessible. However, after the upcoming deadline, the affected Kindles will essentially function as “read-only” devices.

Amazon stated, “Starting May 20, 2026, customers using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer have the ability to buy, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store.” These models have received support for at least 14 to 18 years, but due to advancements in technology, ongoing support for these devices is no longer feasible.

While this news may disappoint owners of older Kindles, Amazon is easing the transition by offering a 20% discount on selected new Kindle models and a £15 eBook credit to affected customers. The company is actively reaching out to impacted users to provide these offers.

For those looking to explore new Kindle options, Amazon now offers a variety of models, including standard versions and Colorsoft devices with color screens. Additionally, individuals seeking more than just book access may find the Scribe range appealing, as these models come equipped with a digital pen for note-taking, document annotation, and book highlighting.
