“Football Fan Receives 3-Year Ban for Assaulting Boy”

A football enthusiast who physically assaulted a 13-year-old boy during a game has been given a three-year ban. Sean Ryan, 21, struck the youngster at the Southport Stadium after the Southport versus Radcliffe FA Cup match on September 16. Identified as a Southport supporter, Ryan attacked the teenager without provocation near The Jack Carr Stand. He was apprehended by stadium personnel and later confessed to committing common assault.

In a court appearance on January 15, Ryan, residing in Old Swan, Liverpool, was issued a three-year football ban, mandated to complete 120 hours of unpaid work, and instructed to pay £250 in compensation along with court expenses. The victim, a Radcliffe fan, was deeply distressed by the incident and experienced physical discomfort as a consequence.

Inspector Stuart McLoughlin criticized the violent behavior, emphasizing that it has no place in football. Ryan’s admission of guilt led to his nationwide football ban. McLoughlin stressed the importance of ensuring a safe environment at football matches and vowed to prosecute individuals engaging in unacceptable and violent conduct.

Southport Stadium, also known as the Merseyrail Community Stadium, serves as the home ground for Southport FC at Haig Avenue. The stadium, with a 7,000 seating capacity, recently underwent enhancements including new seating, corporate amenities, and cladding, funded by club directors, grants, and sponsorships.
