“Jones Warns Against Blaming Civil Servants for Political Failures”

Civil servants are often unfairly blamed for political shortcomings, warned a close aide to Keir Starmer. Darren Jones, the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister, emphasized that civil servants are equally frustrated with the slow pace of change as ministers. He highlighted that they should not be scapegoated for failures in the political realm.

Jones’s statement follows criticism from Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who condemned the tendency within Labour to attribute failures to civil servants, labeling it an “excuses culture.” Streeting stressed the importance of taking responsibility and not deflecting blame onto the civil service.

In his address, Jones outlined plans to reward high-performing civil servants and overhaul the bonus system. While the overall bonus budget will remain unchanged, larger rewards will be given to exceptional individuals. Currently, over half of senior civil servants receive some form of bonus.

Furthermore, Jones praised the success of the Covid vaccine rollout and proposed implementing a similar efficient model for everyday operations, not just during crises. He announced initiatives to streamline recruitment, reduce bureaucracy, and encourage innovation within the civil service.

Jones also proposed the concept of a “new digital state” to enhance public service accessibility. He emphasized the need for government agencies to prioritize efficient service delivery over internal bureaucracy, aiming to provide public services directly to citizens in a user-friendly manner.
