Millions of consumers continue to rely on the major mobile networks, including EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2. However, a recent report from consumer group Which? indicates that these providers are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors.
After surveying over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, Which? discovered that lesser-known networks often offer better value for money and superior customer service. The report aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. The results revealed that the established “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are trailing behind many smaller rivals.
In the rankings, Talkmobile emerged as the top performer, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major network providers, EE secured the highest position at ninth place, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-ranked networks.
The report highlighted price as a significant factor, showing that customers on the Big Four networks pay an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, whereas users on smaller networks pay just £9 on average. Despite the lower prices, many smaller providers utilize the major networks’ infrastructure, ensuring customers can enjoy comparable signal strength and service quality without the premium costs associated with well-known brands.
Switching between networks is simpler than perceived, with some customers able to make the transition in as little as 10 minutes. One Which? member shared their experience of switching from O2 to SMARTY, reducing their monthly bill from £27 to £8 and saving around £200 annually.
Natalie Hitchins, the Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outshine major mobile firms by offering better customer service and more affordable deals. She encouraged customers unhappy with their current service or looking to save money to consider switching to a provider that offers better value.
