Transylvania and Baku have emerged as unexpected favorites for British holidaymakers this year, as per recent findings. The survey, conducted by TopCashback and encompassing 2,000 participants, unveiled a list of lesser-explored destinations on people’s radars, spanning from Rovaniemi in Finland to Panama City. Surprisingly, Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, also made it to the top 30 hotspots, despite recent attention due to US President Donald Trump’s interests.
Topping the list is the enchanting Italian island of Sardinia, closely followed by Portugal’s Madeira and Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. The summer getaway rankings also feature Lapland in Finland, typically renowned for winter escapes, and Gozo, an island off Malta.
Transylvania in Romania, securing the 15th spot, is famously associated with Count Dracula, the vampire residing in the Carpathian Mountains. Additionally, King Charles has ties to the region, owning a retreat there. Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, snags a place in the top 30 as well.
The survey revealed that 43% of respondents are inclined to explore unconventional destinations for their upcoming vacations, signaling a growing interest in unique travel experiences. This trend appears more prominent among younger generations, with 67% of Gen Z individuals eyeing offbeat locations for their travels this year.
While budget-conscious travelers are on the lookout for hidden gems to maximize their spending, the research indicates that Brits prioritize rewarding experiences over cost savings. A significant portion (44%) opt for lesser-known destinations anticipating more memorable journeys, while 38% seek adventure rather than just a holiday vibe.
Although price remains a key consideration for half of the respondents when booking trips, 80% emphasize that the value of a holiday extends beyond monetary aspects to encompass the overall experience, cultural immersion, and the sense of fulfillment derived from the adventure.
Adam Bullock, the UK director at TopCashback, emphasized the significance of value in holiday planning, highlighting that it transcends mere affordability. For many travelers, value equates to the joy and lasting memories accumulated during the trip, making it a topic of excitement and conversation upon their return.
