An inquiry into the death of a woman who was found hanged shortly after she and her spouse shared photos of themselves in a hot tub to mark their anniversary has uncovered tragic new revelations about her passing.
Abigail Garside, a 30-year-old accomplished equestrian, was discovered deceased by a passerby in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, during the early hours of August 18 last year, which coincided with her wedding anniversary weekend. Just hours prior, she had been celebrating with her husband, Samuel Garside.
Although the couple had posted affectionate pictures online from their anniversary celebration, the inquest revealed that Mrs. Garside abruptly left their hotel room and vanished overnight.
During the investigation, Northallerton Coroner’s Court heard that Mrs. Garside stormed out of the hotel room at Rudding Park resort, where the couple from Blackburn, Lancashire, was staying. Despite initial social media posts indicating a successful celebration, tensions arose, leading to Mrs. Garside’s departure from the hotel room.
The inquest disclosed that the couple had indulged in champagne and cocaine throughout the day, bar-hopping in town before a dispute occurred at Mojo’s bar and they returned to their hotel room.
According to Sarah Middleton, the assistant coroner for North Yorkshire, the events of that fateful weekend, meant to be special for their anniversary celebration, took a tragic turn. Alcohol and drugs were consumed, leading to a disagreement at a bar, followed by Mrs. Garside leaving the hotel in the early hours of the morning, inadvertently leaving her phone behind.
Mr. Garside, concerned about his wife’s disappearance, searched for her in vain, only to be informed of her demise by the authorities near the hotel. The couple had plans to relocate to Australia before Mrs. Garside’s untimely death, leaving her family shocked by the unexpected turn of events.
The coroner delivered a narrative verdict, attributing the tragic outcome to the combination of alcohol and drugs, suggesting that Mrs. Garside’s actions were out of character and emphasizing that she had much to live for if not for the influence of substances.
