“Accounts Manager Embezzles £767K for Gambling Addiction”

A woman exploited her role as an accounts manager at a family-owned business, embezzling £767,000 to fuel her gambling addiction, plunging the company into financial jeopardy.

Susanne Redhead’s actions endangered the livelihoods of her colleagues in a shocking breach of trust. Rising through the ranks to oversee finances at Pure Panel Management in Newcastle, Redhead’s deceit was uncovered when she siphoned £100,000 in a week and stole £363,000 in December 2024 alone.

Prompted by suspicious transactions, Redhead was instructed to cease work immediately in January 2025. Admitting her misconduct, she confessed, “I’ve been gambling.” An investigation revealed that she had pocketed £767,272 over 445 unauthorized transactions between November 2023 and January 2025.

Prosecutor Gurjot Kaur disclosed that during the Christmas break, Redhead exploited the office closure to wipe out company accounts completely. This scheme left the business in dire financial straits for the first time in its history.

In a statement, managing director James Gillam expressed shock and dismay over Redhead’s actions, which endangered the company’s stability and the well-being of its employees. Gillam recounted instances where Redhead callously stole from her coworkers, including £18 the night before an expensive staff outing to watch a football match.

Operations director Helen Scorer condemned Redhead’s behavior as “utterly disgusting,” highlighting the risks posed to jobs and the company’s financial health. Redhead, 53, residing in Wroxham Court, Newbiggin Hall, Newcastle, with no prior criminal record, admitted her theft and received a three-year prison sentence.

Defending Redhead, Penny Hall attributed her client’s actions to a gambling addiction spiraling out of control. Hall emphasized that Redhead’s motive was not personal gain but a misguided belief that she could recoup losses through gambling. Expressing deep remorse, Redhead acknowledged the breach of trust and the severe consequences of her actions.

Redhead will undergo Proceeds of Crime Act proceedings to recover any assets she may possess.
