“Team GB Eyes Record Medal Haul at Milano Cortina Winter Olympics”

Team GB aims for its most successful Winter Olympics yet at the upcoming Milano Cortina Games. UK Sport, the organization funding Olympic and Paralympic sports in the UK, anticipates between four and eight medals in northern Italy. The British team achieved its best performance at the Winter Games in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018, securing five medals, including a gold. However, Team GB’s performance leaders are setting even higher expectations for the upcoming event.

The optimism surrounding Team GB stems from the impressive lineup heading to Italy, consisting of world champions, X Games gold medalists, and podium finishers from the World Cup circuit. In the 2024/25 season, British winter athletes claimed nine medals at the World Championships across various sports.

British skiers and snowboarders had a successful season, earning 28 podium finishes in Olympic events, three Crystal Globes for overall World Cup titles, and a World Championship title through Zoe Atkin. The preparations for the Milano Cortina Games have been described as “meticulous” by Chef de Mission Eve Muirhead, who emphasized the focus on creating optimal conditions for the athletes to perform at their best.

With high expectations set for Team GB in multiple disciplines, including men’s skeleton, curling, skiing, and snowboarding, Mirror Sport assesses the top contenders for securing medals in Italy. Notably, Weston, a double men’s skeleton world champion, is leading the men’s rankings after dominating this season’s World Cup events. Muir, a two-time World Cup gold medalist, has been excelling in slopestyle and big air events, while Brookes, the youngest snowboarding world champion, is a strong contender for an Olympic medal.

Atkin, the current halfpipe world champion, has been consistent with podium finishes in the World Cup circuit, including a gold medal. Bankes, a world champion in 2021, is expected to perform well in the mixed team event, aiming for an Olympic medal. The figure skating duo of Fear and Gibson is poised to bring home Britain’s first Olympic figure skating medal since 1994, showcasing their talent and potential.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games will take place from February 6-22, with fans able to watch over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video. The £3.99 discovery+ Entertainment subscription will provide access to TNT Sports 2 for continuous Olympic coverage throughout the games.
