Frankie Dettori has officially retired from his illustrious career as a jockey following a triumphant final race in Brazil, where he clinched victory in the first leg of the nation’s Triple Crown series. Initially planning to retire at Ascot’s Champions Day in October 2023, Dettori had a change of heart and extended his career to compete in the United States.
The 55-year-old announced last November that his retirement would coincide with the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, with a farewell tour in South America culminating at Rio de Janeiro’s Gavea racecourse. During his last races, Dettori secured wins aboard Speak Alpha and Bet You Can in the Brazilian 2,000 Guineas, the Grande Premio Estado do Rio De Janeiro, allowing him one final chance to execute his signature flying dismount celebration.
Reflecting on his final victory, Dettori expressed his surprise at winning a Group 1 race on his retirement day, describing his career as “brilliant” and emotional. Despite bidding farewell to his jockey career, Dettori emphasized his continued involvement in racing, having accepted a role as a global ambassador for Amo Racing under Kia Joorabchian.
In a heartfelt message to his fans, Dettori acknowledged the impact of horse racing on his life, spanning nearly four decades since he began riding as a teenager in Italy. He expressed gratitude to his family, supporters, colleagues, and fans for their unwavering love and encouragement throughout his remarkable journey, concluding with appreciation for the opportunity to pursue his childhood dream.
