Ralph Bulger, the father of James Bulger, has expressed his determination to oppose “monster” Jon Venables as he seeks parole. Venables, now 43, was responsible for the abduction and murder of two-year-old James after he and accomplice Robert Thompson kidnapped the toddler from a shopping center in Merseyside in 1993. Following their sentencing to juvenile detention, Venables and Thompson were later transferred to adult prisons where they have been incarcerated for the past two decades.
With an impending Parole Board hearing on the horizon, Venables has a chance at freedom, a prospect fiercely contested by Ralph Bulger. In an interview with The Sun, Bulger confirmed his intention to attend the parole hearing to hear Venables speak, stating that he will stand for his son James and seek justice in defiance of Venables.
While preparing to confront his son’s killer, Bulger revealed the emotional turmoil he faces with each parole bid by Venables, particularly as they coincide with the anniversary of James’ tragic death. The thought of Venables potentially hurting another child like James weighs heavily on Bulger, who remains resolute in his fight to keep the “monster” behind bars.
Venables has made several unsuccessful parole attempts since his initial incarceration in 1993, including being recalled for possessing child pornography. His most recent parole application was rejected in 2023 due to concerns about public safety, his honesty with professionals, and the need to address outstanding risk factors before considering his release.
The decision highlighted the ongoing risks associated with Venables’ release and the necessity for him to work on his relationship with his probation officer.
