Carlos Alcaraz made history by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, becoming the youngest tennis player in the Open era to achieve a career Grand Slam and breaking Rafael Nadal’s previous record. Despite losing the first set 6-2, Alcaraz rallied to win the next three sets 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 at Rod Laver Arena, claiming his first victory in Melbourne.
The 22-year-old Alcaraz, who has already won each of the other three Grand Slam tournaments twice, had previously faced disappointment in Australia, exiting in the quarterfinals in the past two years, including a loss to Djokovic last year. However, this year, he advanced to his first final and avenged his defeat to Djokovic, defeating the 11-time champion in a little over three hours.
By achieving this feat at 22 years and 272 days, Alcaraz surpassed both Nadal’s and Rod Laver’s age records when they won their Grand Slam titles. Nadal, present at the arena, witnessed Alcaraz rewrite history and secure the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, adding to his seven Grand Slam singles titles and breaking Bjorn Borg’s record as the youngest player to reach that milestone.
The victory also positioned Alcaraz ahead of his rival Jannik Sinner, with whom Djokovic clashed in the semi-finals. Sinner would now need to win all the remaining Grand Slam events of the year to equal Alcaraz’s success.
Djokovic, who at 38 years old was aiming to become the all-time leader in Grand Slam singles titles with 25, fell short after facing physical challenges in the latter sets. Despite a strong start, he could not push the match to a decider in his 38th Grand Slam final.
Following the match, Djokovic congratulated Alcaraz on his historic achievement and acknowledged the presence of Nadal in the stands. Reflecting on their rivalry, Djokovic expressed respect for Nadal and thanked him for watching the final.
The Australian Open final saw a significant shift in the tennis world as Alcaraz emerged victorious, marking a new chapter in the sport’s history.
