Amazon has initiated test flights with drones for its upcoming airborne delivery service in the UK. The US technology giant confirmed the launch of a limited number of flights from its base at Symmetry Park in Darlington, Co Durham. However, the official drone delivery service for customers has not yet been rolled out.
In January last year, Amazon announced Darlington as its UK test center for the drone delivery service. Residents in Darlington will soon have the opportunity to receive packages weighing less than 5 pounds (2.3kg) within a two-hour timeframe.
The latest drone model, MK30, is equipped with advanced technology to navigate around obstacles and ensure the safety of individuals, pets, and property. Amazon expressed enthusiasm about advancing drone delivery in the UK and emphasized collaboration with Darlington Council and the Civil Aviation Authority.
David Carbon, the Vice President of Prime Air, highlighted that the drones are designed for quiet and efficient operation, with safety being a top priority. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the commencement of Prime Air drone flights from the Darlington fulfillment center but clarified that deliveries are not yet operational, with the service expected to launch officially in 2026.
Amazon assured that the drones are fitted with technology enabling them to avoid obstacles like clotheslines or trampolines, which may not be visible on satellite maps. The drones are equipped with cameras that constantly monitor the surrounding airspace during flight to detect and evade other aircraft. The perception technology relies on sophisticated machine learning models to identify various objects, including people, animals, physical barriers, and other drones or airborne vehicles.
