“UK Braces for Heavy Rain: Flood Warnings in Effect”

More than half of the typical January rainfall is forecasted to hit various parts of the UK today. The Met Office predicts that up to 50mph of rain will sweep through southern England, affecting areas like London, Surrey, and Hampshire within a few hours. The downpour is expected to intensify in the late afternoon as a low-pressure system moves eastward.

A weather warning for heavy rain remains in effect until 10pm for regions including London, Kent, Surrey, East Sussex, and West Sussex. Brighton, which usually receives around 75mm of rain in January, could experience up to 50mm today, raising concerns for potential flooding. Residents are advised to prepare an emergency kit containing essential items like insurance papers, contact details, a flashlight with extra batteries, and necessary medications.

Southampton, also under the rain warning, typically sees about 90mm of rainfall in January, but roughly half of that amount is anticipated later today. The Met Office’s forecast indicates that an area of low pressure will move northeastward across England, resulting in persistent and heavy rain throughout the day before clearing in the evening.

Recent rainfall in Port Ellen, Argyll and Bute, prompted flood warnings and alerts by the Environment Agency, particularly along the River Severn in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. Flood concerns extend to areas near London, such as the River Mole in Surrey and The Rivers Wid and Can in Essex.

The upcoming weekend is expected to remain unsettled, with rain and wind clearing on Friday, followed by sunshine and showers. Showers may persist on Saturday, but drier conditions are anticipated on Sunday. Temperature levels are predicted to be around average, with possible overnight fog in some areas.
