An individual passionate about football raised more than £260,000 for charity through the sale of samosas. A mother demonstrated exceptional bravery by rescuing a 10-year-old boy from drowning in the sea. Additionally, a five-year-old girl showcased remarkable courage in rebuilding her life after losing both legs.
These exceptional individuals were among the recipients of the 2024 Pride of Britain Awards. Selected from a large pool of public nominations, these everyday heroes were recognized at a prestigious ceremony in London, co-hosted by Ashley Banjo and Carol Vorderman.
The event took an unexpected turn when P&O Cruises, the new primary sponsor of the Pride of Britain Awards, generously offered each of the 12 winners a cruise vacation as a token of appreciation – a chance to create lasting memories with their families.
We caught up with three honorees who embarked on a 14-night Caribbean voyage aboard Britannia, exploring eight picturesque islands and indulging in top-notch entertainment.
Aiyla Mota, Young Hero
At the age of four, Aiyla Mota fell critically ill with what initially appeared to be a common childhood infection. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to sepsis, multiple organ failure, and the necessity for doctors to amputate both her legs and five fingers to save her life.
Now at the age of five, Aiyla has displayed remarkable resilience. Her unwavering bravery and optimism have astounded those around her, resulting in her earning a Pride of Britain Award and becoming one of the youngest recipients in the program’s history.
Her mother, Eulanda, 28, from Middlesex, expressed, “Aiyla has always possessed a vibrant personality, and despite her challenges, she has not lost that spark. In fact, she exudes even more confidence and vitality. She’s like a magnified version of herself!”
“My grandmother believes she recognizes the gift of a second chance at life and is making the most of it.”
Following the award presentation by P&O Cruises, Aiyla and her family embarked on a Caribbean cruise. Together with Aiyla’s grandmother, Trisha, and Eulanda’s partner, Louis, they savored the experience of exploring Britannia’s 27 dining venues, eight entertainment spots, and four pools.
“The cruise was an unforgettable holiday, and I am immensely thankful to P&O Cruises for this incredible opportunity,” shared Eulanda. “It was our debut cruise experience, and we were pleasantly surprised by the array of activities available onboard.
“One aspect that stood out was how easy it was to forget we were on a ship due to the diverse entertainment options.”
“Aiyla particularly enjoyed the kids’ club, the entertainment, and staying up late! During our island visits, she relished the beaches and a rainforest excursion.
“The stop in Barbados was especially meaningful for me. It was my first visit to where my ancestors hailed from, and stepping on its shores felt like a blessing, connecting me to my roots.”
