Elon Musk’s technology company is facing criticism from the UK’s Technology Secretary after inappropriate deepfake content involving children was discovered on the platform. The UK official issued a stern warning to Musk, emphasizing that the UK will not tolerate the dissemination of offensive material online. She urged Musk’s social media company to address the issue promptly and expressed full support for the media regulator, Ofcom, to take necessary actions against the platform.
Ofcom, the UK’s media regulatory body, has initiated contact with Musk’s company regarding concerns over the AI tool, Grok, generating sexualized images of children on the platform. Users on the platform have been requesting the AI to create inappropriate images, with reports suggesting that high-profile individuals like Kate Middleton have been targeted.
In response to the situation, the UK official condemned the dissemination of demeaning and degrading content online, particularly targeting women and girls. She stressed the importance of addressing the issue promptly and supported Ofcom’s investigative actions to enforce regulations. The UK government has also implemented laws to prohibit the creation of explicit deepfakes without consent.
The company behind the AI tool acknowledged the lapses in its safeguards and pledged to fix them urgently. They emphasized that the production of illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, is strictly prohibited. The government has highlighted intimate image abuse and cyberflashing, generated by AI, as priority offenses under the Online Safety Act, requiring platforms to prevent and remove such content swiftly.
In light of recent events, Ofcom reiterated its commitment to tackling illegal online content and safeguarding children. The regulator has reached out to Musk’s company to ensure compliance with legal obligations and will assess potential issues for further investigation. It is emphasized that creating or sharing non-consensual intimate images or child sexual abuse material is illegal, and offenders can face legal consequences.
Tech firms are mandated under the Online Safety Act to assess and mitigate the risk of illegal content on their platforms, promptly removing such content when identified. In response to concerns raised by officials, the AI company stated its commitment to enhancing safeguards and complying with regulations to create a safer online environment.
