The son of a British couple detained in Iran expressed concerns for their safety following the closure of the UK embassy in Tehran amidst widespread anti-regime protests.
Craig and Lindsay Foreman, who were traveling around the world on a motorbike, were arrested by Iranian authorities in January 2025 on spying charges. Despite denying the allegations, the couple remains imprisoned in Iran amid the chaotic situation fueled by mass protests, arrests, violence, and executions.
Their son, Joe Bennett, disclosed that the prisons in Iran are overcrowded due to the surge in arrests during the protests. He recently spoke to his parents who described the jail conditions as unsafe and frightening, citing issues such as vermin infestation, overcrowding, and frequent fights.
Joe expressed particular concern about the closure of the UK embassy affecting efforts to secure his parents’ release. The embassy has shifted to remote operations following the temporary closure. Legal representatives in Tehran have submitted a bail application for Craig and Lindsay.
Highlighting the challenges his parents face in Evin Prison, Joe mentioned Lindsay’s skin condition due to poor ventilation, Craig’s weight loss, and dental pain. The couple’s deteriorating physical health is exacerbated by inadequate nutrition and medical care.
Amid the uncertainties caused by the embassy closure, Joe emphasized the need for a safe haven for his parents once released from jail. The Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office is currently assessing the situation as efforts continue to secure the Foremans’ freedom.
