“UK Braces for ‘Beast from the East’ Snowfall Amid Flooding”

The United Kingdom has experienced turbulent weather conditions in recent days, including widespread flooding and an Arctic cold snap. Pictures from various regions depicted both the picturesque snowy landscapes and the devastating flood-affected areas. Additionally, a new weather phenomenon known as the ‘Beast from the East’ is expected to bring significant snowfall to the country by the end of the month.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for 23 regions as heavy rain is forecasted to hit a large portion of London, South East England, and South West England. This yellow rain warning is in effect from 9 am until the end of the day, due to a deepening low-pressure system moving northeast across England and Wales. The forecast predicts persistent and heavy rainfall throughout the day, gradually clearing towards the evening.

Rainfall amounts ranging from 20mm to 30mm are anticipated in many areas, with isolated spots likely to receive 40mm to 50mm. The saturated ground coupled with heavy rain raises the risk of surface water flooding on Thursday, according to the Met Office. This could potentially disrupt bus and train services and result in longer journey times due to spray and flooding on roads.

Residents are advised to assess the flood risk to their properties and prepare a flood plan along with an emergency flood kit. To be ready for potential power outages, it is recommended to gather essential items such as torches and a mobile phone power pack.

Various parts of the UK, including Mountsorrel in Leicestershire, have already experienced significant flooding this week. The river Avon in Warwick is still at high levels, and the Met Office has cautioned that heavy rain and melting snow and ice could lead to further flooding after Storm Goretti.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, some breathtaking sights have been captured, such as a misty sunrise over Salisbury cathedral and a father and son braving the snow in the North York Moors National Park. Penarth in Wales also faced strong winds and heavy rain earlier in the week.
