“Keep Your Home Warm: Clever Tips from British Gas”

A tip from a British Gas energy specialist suggests a smart way to keep your home warm without using your central heating. Energy engineer Jessica Rawstron recommends leaving your oven door open after cooking to utilize the residual heat escaping from the appliance. By doing so, the heat can slowly transfer into your kitchen, helping to maintain a warm environment while you dine. However, caution is advised to keep children and pets away from the open door.

British Gas also offers advice on preparing your home for winter, such as sealing gaps around windows and doors to prevent draughts. Additionally, ensuring your radiators are functioning efficiently by bleeding them regularly and keeping up with your boiler’s annual service are essential steps to stay warm during the colder months.

As parts of the UK are under yellow warnings for snow and ice due to plummeting temperatures, households are likely to rely more on their heating systems, especially as energy bills have increased. The current average annual cost for gas and electricity for households paying by direct debit is £1,758, as regulated by the price cap on unit rates and standing charges. It’s worth noting that the total energy bill still depends on individual usage, and those not on fixed energy tariffs fall under the price cap.

For those using pre-payment meters, the price cap has risen to £1,711 per year, while those paying on receipt of bill can expect to pay £1,894 annually. The price cap undergoes updates every quarter, with the next adjustment scheduled for April 2026.
