New York State has announced a state of emergency in anticipation of an imminent severe winter storm approaching the United States. Governor Kathy Hochul officially declared the emergency in a press conference on Friday, preparing the state with ample salt supplies for road treatment and authorizing remote work for all state employees on Monday.
With a massive storm system on the horizon, 14 states have already declared emergencies as the nation braces for heavy snow, ice, and freezing rain. This weather phenomenon results from a convergence of a low-pressure system in the Southwest meeting moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and frigid Arctic air from Canada.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings about a storm brewing over the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains, set to impact southern and midwestern states starting on Friday before sweeping across the east coast by Saturday and reaching as far north as Maine by Sunday. The NWS forecasts widespread heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain stretching from the Southern Rockies to New England, covering areas from Texas through Washington DC, New York, and Boston.
Approximately 160 million people, nearly half of the country’s population across 30 states, are expected to be affected by the snow and ice, with some regions potentially receiving over 12 inches of snow by the weekend’s end. States that have declared emergencies include Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Severe Storms Laboratory, the winter storm comprises heavy snow, blowing snow, and dangerous wind chills. The NWS emphasized the potential for significant ice accumulations leading to prolonged power outages, extensive tree damage, and hazardous travel conditions, urging communities to prepare for extremely cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills post-storm.
In response to the impending weather conditions, US President Donald Trump, known for his skepticism of climate change, took to social media to express disbelief at the cold wave affecting 40 states. Meteorologists attribute the polar vortex, a vast area of cold air encircling the poles, for the surge of Arctic air engulfing North America. Scientific research indicates that Arctic warming can disrupt the polar vortex, potentially causing extreme winter weather events due to its stretching or splitting.
